Indiana Limestone: The Ideal Window & Door Sill Accent Band

Empire State Building

Indiana Limestone has been a praised architectural and ornamental stone by builders across the continent for the last two centuries. It can be seen as the facade of some of the most iconic buildings in America today, most notably, The Empire State Building.

Indiana Limestone is a natural stone having formed over millions of years from marine fossil deposits from a shallow sea that once covered most of what is now the Midwestern United States. It is now primarily quarried in the South Central Region of Indiana where quarries that began in the mid 1800s are still in operation today.

Window & Door Sill Protection

In Ottawa, our most common use for Indiana Limestone is for veneer window sills, door sills, coping stones, and sometimes as wall quoins. It has a natural density similar to that of concrete, making it the ideal option for protecting your home and masonry from water damage and moisture penetration. These sills typically come in 8’ lengths which allows for full length stones to span your entire window/door opening without having any cut smaller pieces mortared together to make continuous sills. Those mortared joints are notorious for cracking over time and often cause further cracking down the masonry work below.

Indiana Limestone sills are also equipped from the quarry's stone cutting plant with a drip key underneath the sill which is absolutely critical for protecting the masonry work below the sill from water damage. The sills also have a depth of 6" which allows for adequate overhang (typically 1.5" to 2") over most masonry veneer applications.

Ornamental Elegance

New Rock Face Indiana Limestone Sill

Through our suppliers, Indiana Limestone is available in 2 1/4” and 4” thicknesses which matches nicely with smaller heritage size bricks as well as the larger style modern size bricks. Due to its natural formation, the colour and texture of Indiana Limestone sills vary slightly. The common finish is a buffed grey available in a smooth face or rock face. These rectangular shaped sills are the perfect accent band to any home's brick or stonework and deliver a refined yet classic appearance regardless of the age of your home.
