Arriscraft Sills- Best Value Sills for Durability & Style

Common Brick Rowlock Sill

Many homes developed in subdivisions across Ottawa cladded with brick, are also equipped with brick window and door sills. These bricks are typically installed in a rowlock pattern with a sloped edge to weep water away from the window/door. Brick sills look fine and save the builder from supplying additional materials to be installed and save on labour costs.

The problem with brick sills is that they don’t hold up well in our harsh climate. Clay bricks will absorb moisture from rain or standing melting snow very easily. Combine this with frequent freeze thaw cycles in the Spring or early winter, it can cause these bricks to spall and deteriorate over time. While modern bricks are typically more vitreous, they still suffer from moisture related issues when installed horizontally as a sill. These inadequate sills also cause water to weep directly from the sill onto the masonry work below it often leading to further brick spalling, mortar deterioration and efflorescence staining.

Lifetime Warranty

Cultured stone sills are a manufactured product by Arriscraft and manufactured here in Ontario. The stone has a sandstone like quality and has a density much higher than most bricks, allowing it to resist water penetration much easier.

All Arriscraft sills are manufactured with a drip key underneath the facing to protect the masonry work below it from exposure to water runoff.

Arriscraft warrantys its products against deterioration for the life of the building, provided it is installed correctly by a professional Masonry Contractor.

Sizing & Facing for Your Retrofit

Arriscraft Smooth Face Sills

Arriscraft Sills are typically a sleek off white/bright grey in colour and come in a smooth or rocked facing to meet the aesthetic needs of the home. They come in a variety of sizes to fit your home’s existing sill openings perfectly at a price tag equal to the cost of a brick sill.

Arriscraft window and door sills are the most cost effective choice for transforming the exterior of your home and to keep it protected from water penetration. New sills should always be installed with a waterproofing barrier underneath as a second line of defence and to help facilitate varying expansions rates in the masonry. They should also be installed with an adequate slope to run water away from the home but not too much that it causes bonding issues over time. For these reasons, it is recommended to hire a professional, licensed Masonry contractor such as Kavanagh Masonry to remove your existing deteriorated window sills and install new Arriscraft ones. Most Arriscraft sill styles and sizing are readily available from our suppliers allowing for efficient installation times at an affordable price.
